Fahadh Faasil's Nuanced Performance In Vettaiyan

Fahadh Faasil, the FaFa as he known among the fans, is back with another stellar performance in TJ Gnanavel-directed Rajinikanth movie Vettaiyan. In the Tamil movie, that boasts off a pan-Indian ensemble cast, (spoiler alert:) Fahadh Faasil comes as the associate of the ‘Vettaiyan’ or The Hunter SP Athiyan IPS donned by none other than Rajinikanth. No, he is not a police officer in the movie. But, a thirudan (thief) who helps his friend, brother and master Athiyan in solving the cases or may be helping the encounter specialist to execute his missions.

Fahadh Faasil‘s character, Patrick, has no much details when it comes to his family or relationships in the movie. There is a moment when the viewer starts to feel like he is going to have somewhat a love-emotional relationship with the character Saranya (Dushara Vijayan). But, the screenplay cuts short their scenes and that never reaches anywhere. Again with ASP Roopa (Ritika Singh) as well, Patrick develops a good rapport that might confuse the viewer. That too remain merely professional.

The character depth of Fahadh Faasil in Vettaiyan is larger than a viewer anticipates when Patrick is being introduced. He comes into the screen as a cook in a den of some local mafia. From there, his character expands to a level in which he does all the ‘dirty work’ of hacking, tapping and snooping of all the bad people. He is at some points looks like Athiyan’s Hanuman, who intrudes into everywhere and comes out with evidences and details of crimes. At some moments, he is like Vedal.

A bit more details into that element:

In Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth and Fahadh Faasil combo would remind the audience of the Vikramaditya-Vedal legend with a twist. Though, in the classic Indian tale where the wise King Vikramaditya faces riddles posed by the witty Vedal, testing his wisdom and moral judgment in every encounter, here, the National award winning actor’s character solves most of the riddles.

In acting, Fahadh is Fahadh – classy, witty, nuanced and never-disappointing mode.

The much talked about union of the actors, though Fahadh’s Patrick as sidekick somewhat reduced character from his previous Tamil roles in Maamannan and Vikram, showcases a powerful combo and the younger actor helps the movie to keep the audience glued to the screen with his one liners and mannerisms. While Maamannan gave the actor to test his range as a violent castiest, in Vikram, he was proving his mettle with a maverick in acting prowess. Unlike these two movie, in Vettaiyan, Fahadh goes on to manage humour, drama and eccentricity in a calculated manner.

Then there is this obvious question: How was his combo with Amitabh Bachchan. There are some scenes, but not significant to denote as something extraordinary. In fact, they were not given chance to have a head-on in the scenes. Because, the basic theme of the movie demanded ethical clashes between Rajini and Bachchan; and Patrick is always team Athiyan.

Many are going to remember his acting in the Rajinikanth movie.
