Vettaiyan "Is Predictable"?: What Reviews Say

The much awaited Rajinikanth film Vettaiyan hit silver screen today. The film boasts huge star cast from Bollywood to Mollywood, including Amitabh Bachchan Rana Daggubati, and Fahadh Faasil in key roles. Helmed by TJ Gnanavel, the film is a treat for the Rajinikanth fans.

According to Indian Express, the film is centred around the inspiring life and gruesome death of govt. school teacher Saranya (Dushara Vijayan). This triggers a series of events that involves so many tangents that it gets too overwhelming. The review said the film gets unnecessarily graphic, and Gnanavel doesn’t make things better by relentlessly hammering this scene on our senses on multiple occasions.  It said another major issue was on how uses red herrings throughout the film. The outlet said Vettaiyan is a film that needed to be clear about its allegiance and stance. It said the film bases itself on the shoulders of Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, and these two veterans prove once again why they are icons of Indian cinema. The review also added that the film is predictable to a fault, and it takes away from the kind of tension associated with such procedurals.

According to Times of India, the movie firmly calls for debate on encounter killings, and how these encounters only target the poor and the rich are never at the receiving end of the gunshots. The director questions the loopholes in the education system. The review said the first 30 minutes of the film is dedicated to Rajini and his fans. Soon, it turns into a fast-paced investigative thriller as Rajini goes all guns blazing with style and substance. An intro fight, a dance number, and a predictable-yet-appealing storyline with fast-paced narration keep the first half tight, even ending on an impactful note. But, the second half goes down a notch as the movie starts getting preachy and starts feeling lengthy, too. The climax confrontation between Rajinikanth and Rana Daggubati is very cliched. What supposedly is meant to explore Rajinkanth’s character’s moral dilemma ends up becoming another commercial caper with a haves vs the have-nots story. The fights are written for whistles, but the action choreography is average at best.

According to Timeline, Vettaiyan is a film that merges commercial cinema with a hard-hitting message. The review said the film treads the familiar path of mass appeal but diverges with its deep dive into the exploitation of students by corporate entities. Timeline said. Vettaiyan is not just another Rajinikanth film. It’s a conversation, one that asks difficult questions about our education system, the exploitation of the underprivileged, and the ethical boundaries of law enforcement. Gnanavel’s message comes through loud and clear—justice is not just about punishment but also about fairness, and sometimes, slowing down is the only way to truly move forward. The review concluded that Vettaiyan is meant for both Rajinikanth and Gnanavel followers. Half of the movie has the power Rajinikanth-level mass appeal and half covers the Jai Bhim director trying to carry forward with well executed social messaging.
