The duo previously offered a cult classic, Thalapathi in 1991, which received critical acclamation and commercial success. Inspired by the friendship of Karna and Duryodhana from Mahabharata, the film was a huge breakthrough in the Tamil film industry at the time, with the collaboration of Rajinikanth, Mammootty and Aravind Swami.

Exploring the friendship, the film has notable inputs from the epic Mahabharata, with Rajinikanth playing Surya, based on Karna, while Mammootty played Devaraj, representing Duryodhana. Arvind played Arjun, based on Arjuna. While Rajinikanth is named Surya, his father’s name is never mentioned, choosing to keep his connect to the god of sun only through his name.

The film interestingly marked the final collaboration of the music composer Illayaraja and lyricist Vaali with Mani. After this film, the director collaborated with AR Rahman and Vairamuthu instead.

The director’s current venture Thug Life has wrapped its shooting and is under post production. The film stars Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Abhirami, Nasser, and Ali Fazal among others. With music by AR Rahman and cinematography by Ravi K Chandran, the film is backed by Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies and Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International.

On the other, Rajinikanth is looking forward to his October 10 release cop story, Vettaiyan.
