"Intense Plot, Great Performances": Netizens Review Junaid Khan Starrer Maharaj

Amid all the controversies and calls for boycott on social media, Netflix and YRF Entertainment’s collaboration project, Maharaj, starring Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan (his debut), Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and a special appearance by Sharvari officially dropped on the OTT platform on Friday. The film is directed by Sidharth P Malhotra and produced by YRF Entertainment.

The historical drama is based on the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, a controversial and revolutionary case in the history of the Indian judiciary system and freedom of the press in the country. Set in pre-Independence India, the film follows journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji and his fight to expose the alleged sexual misconduct of Jadunathji Brijratanji Maharaj, a prominent religious leader of the Vaishnav sect, Pushtimarg.

Critics and fans alike have expressed their appreciation for the film, and the performance of the cast.

A social media user wrote, “Was very excited about Maharaj after all the reviews, but the movie exceeded expectations by a margin! It has an intense plot, some great performances, spectacular visuals and soulful music, it also gives you a lot to think about. A powerful debut by Junaid Khan.”

Another user said, “Really touched to see Junaid Khan ‘s fantastic performance in the very important film Maharaj streaming on Netflix. It’s one of those performances that stay with you for a while. Jaideep Ahlawat, how do you do this every time?”

Rating it a 10 out of 10, this user said, “WHY is it on OTT? I’m not over rating it. We need to support such books and movies. We shouldn’t be ashamed to accept mistakes and reform. SUCH movie is extremely needed on big screen. If there is any wrong custom in our home/ Religion, we need to introspect and reform.”

This social media user shared his thoughts, “First of all I want to say it loud that YRF & director Sidharth P Malhotra deserve a pat on their back for choosing to make a film on a topic like this in such a sensitive country like ours! It was so nauseating to know that such things once existed!”

“A Powerful Film told by YRF in the name of Maharaj. Absolutely brilliant and an eye opener. Stellar performance from Junaid Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, Sharvari Wagh and other supporting cast,” praised another social media user.
