Sarfarosh Celebrates 25 Years: Revisit The Iconic Aamir Khan Film

Edited by Aishwarya Krishnan

On April 30, 1999, a film hit theatres that paved the way for crime drama in the Hindi film industry. Directed by John Matthews Matthan, Sarfarosh created waves in Indian cinema with excellent storytelling and thought-provoking story, soulful music, brilliantly written dialogues, and a strong performance by its amazing cast of Aamir Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Sonali Bendre, and Mukesh Rishi.

Celebrating its silver jubilee today, Sarfarosh is considered one of the finest films in Bollywood even today. Revolving around an honest police officer and his quest to combat terrorism, Sarfarosh was a critical and commercial success. The National Film Award winner continues to garner praise for Shah’s role of Gulfam Hassan, Aamir’s iconic ACP Rathod, and Bendre’s beautiful and enchanting Seema.

Actor Sonali Bendre shared a montage of her character from the film, celebrating the film’s 25 years.

But perhaps one of the most beloved aspects of the film is its groove-worthy music, which continues to resonate with people. Composed by Jatin-Lalit, the timeless classic includes memorable songs such as “Hoshwalon Ko Khabar Kya,” “Jo Haal Dil Ka,” and “Iss Deewane Ladke Ko.” Not only is the entire album iconic, but it also offers some beautiful and soulful lyrics.

Although there is no dearth of patriotic films in Bollywood, what sets Sarfarosh apart is its realistic portrayal of patriotism and a balanced approach towards heroism and vulnerability. With a cult following – both for the film and its music – Sarfarosh has carved its place as a cinematic milestone in the Bollywood film industry, recognised internationally as well.
