The Kerala Film Producers’ Association recently released the financial report of Malayalam films released in February 2025, raising questions over the profit percentages of the films. Actor Kunchacko Boban responded to the figures and stories circulating around the box office performance of his latest release, Officer On Duty.

Directed by Jithu Ashraf and produced by Greenroom Cinemas, the action thriller casts Kunchacko Boban, Priyamani, Jagadish, and Vishak Nair in lead roles. The film received a good reception from the audience and earned around Rs 53 crores at the box office, as per the Sacnilk report.

However, figures released from the producers association stated that the film Officer on Duty, made with a budget of Rs 13 crore, earned a theatre share of Rs 13 crore.

Responding to the same, Kunchacko said that the discussion on investment and success should be done by the film’s producers and not by him or other association officials. The actor declined the claims and revealed that the production cost of the film was not Rs 13 crore and was, in fact, much higher than that.

Highlighting the inaccuracies of the report, he said that the claim, which stated that the producers received only Rs 11 crore in return, was also incorrect. In reality, the film received at least twice the reported amount, if not more, added Kunchacko.

He also said that the Rs 11 crore mentioned by the association likely refers to the share received from Kerala. However, even the amount collected from theatres of Kerala is more than Rs 11 crore, he pointed out. Underlining these facts, the actor concluded that these figures are neither precise nor transparent.

Expressing his disappointment, the Bougainvillea actor said, “If they are presenting numbers, they should do so accurately.”

Denoting the film’s entry into the 50 crore club, Kunchacko highlighted that the concept of a “crore club” is based on a film’s total revenue, including the theatre share, taxes paid to the government, and other earnings (OTT rights, satellite rights, and others).

He further added that in Kerala alone, Officer on Duty collected around Rs 30 crore so far. It also had performed well outside Kerala, and thus he concluded that the film had undoubtedly surpassed Rs 50 crore.

The crime thriller revolves around a tough and angry police inspector, Harishankar, who is demoted to the Circle Inspector (CI) post. The movie takes an interesting turn when he receives a complaint against Chandrababu, who runs a jewellery racket. Harishankar decides to investigate the case without considering the challenges en route. It leads to the unfolding of a whole list of horrific crimes, also linked to his tragic history.

Ending its theatrical run, the film made its OTT debut on March 20 on Netflix. Officer on Duty will be available in the Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada languages.
