Kundala Puranam Review: A Powerful Indrans Movie With A Relatable Story

Serendipity is the word one would be looking for when watching an Indrans movie. Indrans, who has carved a unique niche for himself with his exceptional acting prowess, thrives in Kundala Puranam (Legend of earrings) and his acting as the protagonist in the Santhosh Puthukkunnu -directed movie is a testament to his versatility and depth as an actor. Kundala Puranam is a substantiation of the completion of his transformation from a comedian to a serious actor, who is now remarkable showcasing his ability to imbue characters with profound emotional resonance.

The movie, as the name Kundala Puranam says, is about earrings, which is about Venu (Indrans), his family comprising wife (Remya Suresh), school going girl child and a group of villagers who are in a parched land living with the support of a well that was dug in front of Venu’s house. Indrans’ as Venu is characterised by subtlety and authenticity that bring his character to life in a deeply relatable manner for any mere mortal who are in the sidelines of the mainstream. Venu works as a guard in the city while the womenfolk from the village survive on MGNREGA.

As they progress in the normal life, Kingini, Venu’s daughter, loses her earrings to the well. The earrings were bought by Venu’s meagre income and it was Kingini’s only wish for a long time after seeing many of her peers wearing earring in the classroom. From then onwards, the movie concentrates on the commensurate scenarios of the marginalised when they lose something hard-earned and dear.

Kundala Puranam is the real manifestation of actors giving their best if they are given proper room for execution. Performances of Annur, Unni Raja and Remya Suresh are confirmation for this.

On Indrans again: In Kundala Puranam, his portrayal of complex emotions, often with minimal dialogue, speaks volumes about his skill in conveying the intricacies of human experience. This movie again proves his ability to seamlessly transition between genres and character types underscores his adaptability and commitment to his craft. Indrans’ acting in Kundala Puranam is marked by an understated yet powerful presence, making his performances both memorable and impactful.

Director Santhosh Puthukkunnu and writer Sudheesh Kumar have chosen a path in which the story transmits with a comfortable pace and accuracy – a common format new generation Malayalam dramas being presented these days.

The north-Malabar slang used in the movie with many actors who are comfortable in the language adds the movie to the long list of Malayalam movies like ‘Nna, Thaan Case Kodu’, ‘Sureshanteyum Sumalathayudeyum Hrudayahariyaya Pranayakadha’, ‘Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam’ among others.

The overarching theme of the movie is about the sacrifices the people from the lower strata of the society ready to do when they are hit by challenges. The story is a simple one, but carries the message powerfully.

Timeline verdict: Kundala Puranam is an Indrans movie with good messaging.
