L2: Empuraan, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, hit theaters on March 27, 2025. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy, this Malayalam action thriller delves deeper into the world of Stephen Nedumpally, played by Mohanlal, and his alter ego, the international crime lord Khureshi-Ab’raam.

The film, produced on a budget of Rs 180 crore, also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Zayed Masood, along with Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and other prominent actors.

Empuraan picks up where Lucifer left off, exploring Khureshi-Ab’raam’s extensive network and his influence in global crime syndicates and political landscapes. The narrative threads through international drug wars and geopolitical intrigue, while also focusing on the political turmoil in Kerala, necessitating Stephen’s intervention. A key backstory reveals the childhood trauma of Zayed Masood and his connection with Khureshi-Ab’raam, adding an emotional layer to the action.

The film boasts high-octane action sequences and grand visuals, with cinematography by Sujith Vaassudev and music by Deepak Dev. Despite mixed reviews regarding its narrative depth, Mohanlal’s powerful performance and the film’s stylish execution have been widely praised. L2: Empuraan has achieved significant box office success, becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025 and the second highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, grossing an estimated Ra 250 crore worldwide.
