Ram Gopal Varma Announces His New Project: "Syndicate"

Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has unveiled his latest project, titled Syndicate, promising a gripping and terrifying cinematic experience. Taking to social media platform X, he shared the film’s concept and his vision, describing it as his biggest film to date.
Varma opened his announcement with a chilling quote: “Only man can be the most terrifying animal.”

He then elaborated on the inspiration behind Syndicate, linking it to the cyclical nature of crime and terrorism. “In continuation to my confession note on Satya, I decided to make the biggest film ever. The film is called Syndicate. It’s about a terrifying organisation which threatens the very existence of India,” he revealed.

Explaining the historical context of criminal evolution, Varma said, “Street gangs which flourished till the 70s were finished when they got absorbed into hardline political parties. Smugglers, who rose due to demand for electronic goods and gold, were destroyed by economic reforms. Then, deadly corporate gangs like D Company arrived, only to be crushed again.”

He continued, “Similarly, early terrorists like Black September paled in comparison to deadly groups like Al-Qaeda, which itself looked small next to the horrific ISIS. But in the past 10 to 15 years, India has seen no notable criminal organisations. Now, with intense polarisation across various groups, the time is ripe for a new kind of organisation to rise.”

The film explores the formation of a shadowy, alliance-driven syndicate that unites forces from policing agencies, politicians, ultra-rich businessmen, and the military. “Syndicate is a futuristic story not set in the faraway future, but what can happen even tomorrow or next week,” he warned. Using the example of 9/11, Varma emphasised, “The world woke up to Al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001, but did not know its existence on September 10.”

He promised a scary film, not because of supernatural elements, but because it “scarily exposes what horrors human beings can do.” The story will delve into the nature of crime and terror, proving that while victories occur, “crime and terror never die. They keep coming back in deadlier forms.”

Ending his announcement, Varma said, “I took a vow to wash away all my cinema sins with this one single film called Syndicate.”

Details about the cast and crew will be revealed soon.
