Mumbai, Maharashtra: Director Ram Gopal Verma, or RGV, has reportedly found himself in trouble after Mumbai’s Magistrate Court sentenced him to three months in jail in a cheque bounce case. RGV was reportedly not present during the hearing.

According to reports, after hearing the case for over seven years, the Mumbai court issued a non-bailable warrant against the Satya director.

He was reportedly found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. He has been ordered to pay Rs 3.75 lakh as compensation to the complainant. If the director fails to do so within the span of three months, he will be given an additional three months of jail time.

The director had been struggling with finances since some of his previous films failed to make a mark at the box office.

In 2018, a cheque bounce case was filed by a company called Shree through Maheshchandra Mishra against RGV. The director, who recently announced his new film titled Syndicate, was granted bail after providing a personal bond and a Rs 5000 security deposit in June 2022.

A detailed judgement is awaited.

The last film directed by RGV was the 2024 Vyuham, which revolved around the untimely death of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. RGV also made an unexpected cameo in Nag Ashwin and Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD.

RGV is credited for redefining Indian cinema by showing raw and gritty characters with layered storytelling at a time when the Hindi film industry resorted to the usual masala flicks.

Known for his controversial remarks, the director recently celebrated the re-release of his 1998 cult classics Satya featuring Manoj Bajpayee, JD Chakravarthy, Urmila Matondkar, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Shefali Shah and more.
