September 26 marks 100th birth anniversary of legendary Dev Anand, a man secured a distinct place for himself in Hindi film industry with tilted head and suave. One among the triumvirate (Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor) dominated Hindi film screen for decades, Mr. Anand worked over 100 films, and besides acting, he wore many hats including producer, director, and writer.

In 1946, Mr. Anand made his debut with Prabhat Films”s Hum Ek Hain, on Hindu-Muslim unity. Ziddi, and Baazi, the films that followed brought him recognition and success. While he continued his success streak with films like Jaal, Taxi Drive, Insaniyat , Munimji, C.I.D., and many more. Vijay Anand’s The Guide marked remarkable milestone in his career.

The romantic hero image suited well with the actor; Manzil, Kinare Kinare, Maya, Asli-Naqli, and Mahal were some the prominent ones in sixties. Referred as the George Peck of Indian cinema, his fast-paced dialogues, speech pattern, the smile, and styling – with hats, mufflers and scarves, became instant trademarks. While enjoying success as a romantic hero, he made impression as rebel hero with Baazi, and Jaal.

In over his six decades spanning career, he has produced 35 films, directed 19, and wrote screenplays for 13. Besides four Filmfare Awards, Mr. Anand received Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002.

On his 100th birth anniversary many actors like Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, and Gulshan Devaiah paid tributes to the icon and shared their favourite movie of Mr. Anand.

As the Dadasaheb Phalke Award announced on the same day, in an interview with News18, Waheeda Rehman, veteran actress and recipient of Award this year said: “It is a huge honour and a privilege that the Government of India chose me to be conferred with such a prestigious award. It makes me very grateful that the recognition has come to me on the centenary birthday of my favourite co-star late Dev Saab (Dev Anand).”
