Some movies end with tragedy and the characters from those scenes remain etched in the memory of the moviegoer for long, in other words, they remain a pain in the viewers” hearts. Deepak Jethi, the Sahib character from latest Malayalam movie Malayalee from India is one such character. Mainly known as a television and voice over artist, Deepak is not new to Malayalam cinegoers. Before the latest Nivin Pauly-movie, Deepak was part of Mammootty and Arjun Sarja-starrer Vandae Maatharam, Mammootty and Dileep-starrer Kammath & Kammath, Mohanlal”s 1971: Beyond Borders and Jayaram”s Sathya in Malayalam in last decade.
Sahib, a Pakistani who works in in the Arabian desert, enters into the story of Malayalee from India a bit late, but, from then onwards, Deepak Jethi”s character controls the whole story of the Dijo Jose Antony movie. His story is about survival, progressive ideas, fatherhood and friendship. Though he appears like a bad boss in the beginning, as twists emerge in the story, he becomes a good friend of the protagonist, Gopi, played by Nivin Pauli.
He is a survivor from Pakistan”s Rawalpindi seeking livelihood in Arabia. He works in a farm, and before Gopi”s arrival, another Malayalee had cheated him and run away with all his savings. So, his attitude to the first Malayali arrives after being cheated invited the ire of Sahib. Till Gopi fall ill with Covid-19, what we see on the screen is an angry and furious Sahib. But, in time, Gopi and Sahib become friends and their comradery grows with the cricket they play with a “Sudani” from Sudan, Momo.
Then tragedy hits. Sahib also falls victim to Covid (rest is part of the main story, and I dont want to spoil the story for you). But, as Sahib, Deepak Jethi, a humongous man, is perfect fit and his acting is great addition to make the character make the deserving impact on you.
