Apparently, Shah Rukh Khan had several rum shots during the shooting of the iconic movie, Devdas, said his co-star Tiku Talsania. The Sanjay Leela Bansali film had portrayed Khan in the literary character as an alcoholic. In recent interview with Digital Commentary, Talsania said Khan consumed alcohol during scenes to add authenticity to the character.
Talsania who played Dharamdas in the film said he was concerned after seeing Shah Rukh Khan consuming alcohol amidst the scene and asked Khan what he was doing. Khan gave the reply as his titular character Dev, and said, “sir, acting to ho jayegi. Aankhon mein sharab dikhti nahi hain, uska kya?”.
Talsania praised Khan’s dedication and emphasised that the portrayal of intoxication must be visible in the eyes. He said that though one can act a drunk scene without consuming alcohol, the scene will not work much. He said for the role of Devdas, the presence of alcohol in his eyes is needed to do justice to the character. Talsania further praised ‘King Khan’ as a genius who puts immense efforts into his character. He recalled how Khan used to come to the set of Devdas with his own shot breakdown.
Devdas is a 2002 film which also starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Paro and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. The tragic love story of Paro and Dev and Chandramukhi’s unrequited love captivated audience with its gorgeous visuals that touches one’s heart and soulful music.
