Kochi, Kerala: Actors Shwetha Menon and Kukku Parameswaran scripted history by becoming first leading female figures of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) on Friday.

Winning against actor Devan, Shwetha Menon secured the position of the Malayalam film body’s president, nearly a year since the dissolution of the Mohanlal-led committee over the Hema Committee report, which revealed prevalent sexual harassment allegations in the film industry. Kukku Parameswaran defeated Raveendran to be elected as the organization’s general secretary.

Actor Unni Shivapal has been elected as the new treasurer, while Jayan Cherthala and Lakshmipriya were selected to the post of vice-presidents. Out of the total 504 members, over 290 cast their votes to elect the executive committee of AMMA for the next three years.

The voting was held between 10 am to 1 pm in Kochi, and the result was announced at around 4 pm. This election was one of the most controversial as it was marred by personal disputes and sexual abuse cases.

Notably, it is the first time in history that the actors’ body had a woman as its president or general secretary in its three-decade-old existence.
