As the celebrated Indian epic science fiction Kalki 2898 AD hits threat today, social media has been abuzz discussing the nuances of Nag Ashwin’s work.

The mega cameos of the film had already given push to the expectations of cinephiles, as the movie cast Bahubali fame Prabhas, megastar Amitabh Bachan, Kamal Hassan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani, Dulquer Salman, Vijay Devarakonda among others.

The plot, a mix of Hindu mythology, is set in the dystopian city of Kasi in 2898 AD and shows the rise of the superhero Kalki, inspired by the 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu, to save the unborn child of Deepika Padukone’s character.

The movie has been receiving a mixed review, with mostly cinephiles expressing their admiration and surprise at the “brilliance and excellence” of the making. Many users called the film a “Hollywood vibe,” praising the screenplay, cast, storytelling, etc. Amid the hype, there are criticisms too.

An X user, Kundan Singh, termed the first half “so good” and “amazing,” expressing his confidence that the movie would earn a remarkable place in Indian cinema. Commenting on the performance of Prabhas, the user wrote, “Rebel Star Prabhas is real Baahubali,” referring to the actor’s thundering blockbuster. If the performance met the demand, the character could be another feather in the Bahubali star’s saga.

Another user, Rohit has viewed the first half as bearable “whenever Prabhas is not on the screen.”  “The world building is good but it’s boring first half…. And Comedy falls flat! Some cringe moments too…! So far very poor! Hoping to get it better in Second Half!,” he wrote.

Another user, Valmeeki, could not bear the negatives for the “masterpiece.”  “If you see someone giving negative reviews about this masterpiece #kalki2898ad , they’re just indian samosa critics. Here’s how foreigners are reacting to it: it’s being hailed as epic,” he wrote, sharing a review of a foreinger.
