SRK-Rajkumar Hirani’s “Dunki” Strikes A Nostalgic Chord, Receives Praise From Director Hansal Mehta

Dunki, the latest Shah Rukh Khan release has found a new fan and it is none other than renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta who has showered praise on the SRK-Rajkumar Hirani collaboration, describing it as a nostalgic and heartwarming cinematic experience. Mehta, known for his critically acclaimed movies like Shahid, CityLights and Aligarh, shared his thoughts on social media, expressing his genuine appreciation for the film.

In a tweet, Hansal Mehta stated, “I really enjoyed Dunki. Not perfect but so what. It’s perfectly fine. It gave me what I miss at the movies. It was nostalgic, heartfelt, simple and an ode to what our films once used to be.”

The movie, according to latest reports, has raked in more than Rs 200 crore in the box office globally. The movie, it stars Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani and Vicky Kaushal, was released on December 21.

Mehta’s remarks reflect a sentiment shared by many who have longed for the charm of classic Bollywood storytelling.  The director continued his praise by acknowledging the emotional impact of the film. “Nice to end the year with Shah Rukh Khan tugging at your heart strings, looking into her eyes with love and playing a softie. Lovely ensemble and an enduring charm pervades the film which is not a drama, not a comedy, not a tragedy and not a thriller,” he added.


Mehta emphasized that “Dunki” was not a film to be overanalyzed or overthought, highlighting its simplicity and its tribute to the essence of classic Indian cinema.

“It is a Rajkumar Hirani film all the way. Go watch it and decide for yourself,” Mehta urged his followers, suggesting that the audience experience the film firsthand.  “Dunki” has generated significant buzz ahead of its release, with fans eagerly anticipating the magic that Rajkumar Hirani is known to weave on the big screen.
