
‘Sumathi Valavu’ Soars At Box Office: Makers Announce Part 2
The Malayalam horror-comedy Sumathi Valavu has emerged as one of the biggest crowd-pullers of the year, prompting its makers to announce a prequel just a week after release.
The film, released on August 1, 2025, has been running to houseful shows across Kerala, racing towards the ₹20 crore global mark in just ten days.
Directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar and written by Abhilash Pillai, the film stars Arjun Ashokan, Gokul Suresh, Saiju Kurup, Balu Varghese, Malavika Manoj, and Sshivada in key roles. Released on August 1, the movie has been drawing houseful shows, blending supernatural thrills with situational comedy.

Others in key roles include Joohi Jayakumar, Sidharth Bharathan, Gopika Anil, Sminu Sijo, Jasnya Jayadeesh, Sravan Mukesh, Deva Nandha, Sija Rose, Lekshmi Abhilash, Manoj K U, Jayakrishnan, Kottayam Ramesh, Rafi, and Bhama in a cameo appearance.
Produced by Murali Kunnumpurath under the Waterman Films LLP banner in association with Think Studios, the film was shot in Palakkad between November 2024 and March 2025. Cinematography is by P. V. Shankar, editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali, and music by Ranjin Raj, who also composed hit tracks for Malikappuram.
Inspired by local folklore from Mylamoodu, Thiruvananthapuram, Sumathi Valavu tells the story of a haunted stretch of land where the ghost of a murdered pregnant woman is said to linger. The location’s legend, dating back to the 1950s, has been intertwined with fictional humour and horror for the big screen.

The film’s success has now set the stage for Sumathi Valavu 2: The Origin, which will explore the tragic backstory behind the haunting. The prequel will reunite Shankar, Pillai, and composer Ranjin Raj, with producers Gokulam Gopalan and Murali Kunnumpurath on board once again.
According to the makers, the period film will trace events during the British era, when William Prabhu’s army tried to march from Ambasamudram to Travancore, only to discover that the only passage lay through the mysterious Sumathi Valavu.
