The Writer Who Redefined Malayalam Crime Dramas: Shahi Kabir Returns With Unmadham

With Unmadham set to hit theatres on July 30, Malayalam cinema is once again turning its attention to one of its most distinctive storytellers, Shahi Kabir.

Over the past few years, he has built a reputation for crafting gripping, deeply human stories rooted in realism, particularly those revolving around policing, crime, and the moral dilemmas faced by ordinary people.

What makes Shahi Kabir stand apart is not just his writing, but the authenticity behind it. Before entering the film industry, he served as a police officer, an experience that has significantly shaped his storytelling.

His scripts mostly explore the emotional and ethical complexities of law enforcement, power, and justice.

Shahi Kabir first gained widespread recognition with Joseph (2018), a crime drama that was praised for its layered narrative and emotional depth.

However, it was Nayattu (2021) that firmly established him as one of Malayalam cinema’s finest screenwriters.

Directed by Martin Prakkat, Nayattu was celebrated for its unflinching realism and its portrayal of how politics, caste, and the police system intersect.

The film followed three police officers who become fugitives after an accidental incident, exposing the vulnerabilities of those within the system itself.  Nayattu examined institutional pressure and survival with remarkable honesty.

The film received widespread critical acclaim, earning Shahi Kabir the National Film Award for Best Screenplay and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story.

It is still regarded as one of the defining Malayalam films of the decade and remains a benchmark for realistic political thrillers.

Shahi Kabir’s fascination with police stories continued in Officer on Duty (2025), another thriller that explored the psychological burden of policing rather than merely focusing on action.

His stories consistently place flawed, vulnerable characters at their centre, allowing audiences to witness the emotional consequences of violence, authority, and difficult choices.

In 2022, Kabir stepped behind the camera with Ela Veezha Poonchira, making his directorial debut. The atmospheric thriller won him the Kerala State Award for Best Debut Director, proving that his command over storytelling extended beyond screenwriting.

He followed it with Ronth in 2025, continuing his exploration of grounded, character-driven narratives.

Now, all eyes are on Unmadham, directed by Kiran Das and written by Shahi Kabir. The psychological thriller stars Kunchacko Boban and Lijomol Jose in the lead and is presented by T-Series Films and Panorama Studios, with Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak producing the project.

Unlike Kabir’s previous police procedurals, Unmadham ventures into psychological thriller territory, suggesting a shift in genre while retaining the realism that has become his signature.

The film is expected to explore the complexities of the human mind with the same grounded approach that has defined his earlier work.
