"Why Are You Shouting...": Asif Ali Recalls Lessons From Mammootty

Asif Ali, who has given yet another stellar performance in his latest release Rekhachithram, cannot praise Mammootty enough. The star said that ‘Mammukka’ has always inspired him in Malayalam cinema. He also shared about dubbing lessons he got from Mammootty. Asif added that Mammootty for him is a textbook and the superstar cannot be called nothing short than a legend.

Speaking to Wonderwall Media, Asif recalled his first encounter with Mammootty, and the first lesson he learned from him. The Kishkindha Kaandam star said he was able to meet Mammootty after the release of the film Apoorvaragam. When Asif met Mammootty, he said told Asif that his acting was good but advised him to look into his dubbing skills. Mammootty even asked Asif that why is he shouting out his dialogues. When the latter asked how to change it, Mammootty advised him to learn it from senior actors.

“That was the first time I saw Mammukka alone for the first time. He said “yeah…I just watched Sibi’s movie (Sibi Malayil’s movie Apoorvaragam)…its good. But you should pay attention to dubbing…its a little problematic…go and watch when experienced people are dubbing”, he told me”.

A few days after the encounter, Asif got chance to visit Mammootty’s dubbing session at a studio in Panampilly Nagar. When Asif met Mammootty, the latter asked, “Why are you here?”. When Asif said that he came to learn dubbing, the Bramayugam star asked, “Who am I to teach you dubbing?”. However, he took Asif not only inside the studio, but inside the dubbing room as well.

“He took me in…and dubbed dialogues in different versions. He taught me how a word’s meaning changes depending on the stress we give to it…how to make it sound good, how to do dubbing by overlapping…how can one makeup a low acting through dubbing. I don’t think any institution can teach the art this deep in such a short time”.
