Chemicals In Children's Mattresses Linked To Hormonal Disorders, Other Serious Conditions: Study

It is undeniable that proper sleep is an essential part of the human growth trajectory, and equally important is ensuring a hygienic and comfortable nap for babies and children for their healthy developmental cycle. To parents’ worry, a recent study revealed that many of the mattresses available on the market emit toxic chemicals and flame retardants that are capable of harming the brain, causing hormonal disorders in children.

The study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology on April 15 stated that the highest levels of chemicals were found around children’s beds. The chemicals such as phthalates are linked to causing serious issues such as childhood obesity, asthma, cardiovascular issues, premature deaths, and even cancer.

Miriam Diamond, the author of the report and professor in the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Toronto, said that they measured chemicals in the air of 25 children’s bedrooms between the ages of 6 months and 4 years. The result was shocking as the researchers found alarming levels of more than two dozen phthalates, flame retardants and UV filters.

The research team, after finding mattresses to be a key source of exposure to several chemicals, pointed out that the warmth and weight of the sleeping child could increase the off-gassing of the toxicants.

According to Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies, Bright Futures, an alliance of nonprofits, scientists and donors, said that even something as simple as a child’s body heat and weight on a mattress can increase the release of toxic chemicals into the air the babies breathe while sleeping. Houlihan is, however, not involved in the new research.

Regarding the brands that sell mattresses with harmful chemicals, the study said that they are well-known and lower-cost mattresses found at leading retail stores. The report did not mention the brand names. According to Houlihan, the mattresses tested emitted toxic chemicals regardless of their price, materials, or country of origin, and she added that they also contained additives above legal limits.

People, especially children, are vulnerable to the disruptive impact of chemicals due to their rapidly developing brains and bodies. Exposure to phthalates and other chemicals will have several adverse health impacts on children. The result could be allergic diseases, behavioral problems, and potentially even developmental delays or disorders like autism.

Studies have also linked phthalates to lower sperm count and testosterone levels, childhood obesity, asthma, cardiovascular issues, premature deaths, and cancer, among others.
