India’s drug regulatory body, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), recently approved the country’s first eye drops that eliminate the need for glasses. The decision comes following an earlier recommendation by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on the PresVu eye drop, India Today reported.

With the final approval for PresVu eye drops, the product will be introduced in the domestic market in the first week of October. PresVu is the first eye drop in India specifically developed to reduce reliance on glasses for people affected by presbyopia, a common age-related vision condition. The disease usually affects those aged over 40. The condition affects between 1.09 billion and 1.80 billion people worldwide, and it leads to difficulty in focusing on close objects.

The manufacturers have applied for a patent for this unique formulation and its manufacturing process. The formula reportedly provides benefits of lubricating the eyes in addition to eliminating the need for glasses for the affected. The product has advanced dynamic buffer technology and would ensure consistent efficacy and safety for long-term use.

According to Dr. Dhananjay Bakhle, the approval of PresVu is a promising development in ophthalmology. “For patients with presbyopia, this eye drop offers a non-invasive option that can enhance near vision without the need for reading glasses,” the media house quoted Dr. Dhananjay Bakhle.
