6 Arrested In Tamil Nadu For Beating And Urinating On 2 Dalit Men

Six people were reportedly arrested from Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district after allegedly assaulting two Dalit men and robbing them. It is said that a group of six approached Manoj and his friend Mariyappan, both hails from Manimoortheeswarar in Tirunelveli, and asked about their caste identity.

The duo was on their way to took a bath in the pond on Tuesday evening. They were stopped by the group and questioned on their native regions and caste.

The group, who eventually learned the two men were Dalits, they allegedly assaulted the men and reportedly urinated on them. As the news agency ANI reports, the victims were detained by the gang at the same spot till night. They also claimed to the police that the accused stolen their phones and ATM cards along with a cash of Rs 5,000.

The gang forced the two to strip naked, insulted them using their caste names, and urinated on them. The victims, the 21-year-old S Manoj Kumar and 19-year-old S Mariappan, are members of the Devendra kula Vellalar community, while the offenders are from the maravar community.

The men then somehow managed to escape from the assault and reached a house of their relative nearby. They informed the matter to their parents and were later taken to Tirunelveli Government Hospital. Both are under treatment now.

According to the police, the six were arrested and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed under the sections of 302 and 397 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 3 (1)(2), 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s), 3(2)(va) of the Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/ST Act. Further investigation by the police is underway.
