The bail comes amid activists Imam and Umar Khalid face repeated bail denials, sparking outrage among a section of the public. Despite being in jail for years without trial or conviction, the denial of bail has triggered debate regarding the fundamental rights of the citizens.
According to a report by Scroll, Sharjeel Imam is not yet on trial, even though he has been in custody for over six years. Without trial of conviction, the activist like many other accused in the riot case, remains an undertrial prisoner in judicial custody
