The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday filed the chargesheet in the disproportionate case against Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sachin Sawant, and an exclusive report by Free Press Journal claimed that, the Directorate has found links between Malayalam actress Navya Nair and the former Additional Commissioner of Customs and GST.
The ED, a multi-disciplinary economic intelligence and investigation agency, according to the Journal, has questioned and recorded the statement of Navya Nair in the case. The actress’ statement was submitted in a Special ED court last week.
Navya Nair, born Dhanya Veena in Kerala”s Alappuzha district, is an Indian actress who has starred in films across three languages: Malayalam, Kannada, and Tamil. She is a recipient of two Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actress, the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam, and the Kalaimamani Award for her contribution to Tamil cinema.
Navya Nair, a versatile actress, is best known for her performances in movies like Nandanam, Gramaphone and Oruthee.
The probe agency found Navya Nair”s involvement by gathering mobile data, chats, and statements from Sawant as they were investigating a Central Bureau of Investigation FIR into the disproportionate assets case involving the IRS officer, the Journal said quoting sources.
The agency found Mr Sawant and Ms Nair were very close and the former traveled to Kochi in Kerala several times to meet the actress.
However, according to the Journal, Navya Nair denied any relationship, closeness with the officer and stated that they were just friends. In her statement, Navya Nair has mentioned that Mr Sawant had gifted her some jewellery as a gesture of friendship, reported the Journal.
Apart from Navya Nair, the investigation agency has recorded statement of another woman friend of Mr Sawant.
Earlier, Sachin Sawant had worked with the ED in its Mumbai zone 2 as a deputy director.
Navya’s family clarifies
Meanwhile, some Malayalam media houses reported a clarification from the actress’ family in this regard. According to reports, the family said that they knew Mr Sawant as a resident of the same housing society and had helped him visit Guruvayoor temple in Thrissur. Apart from a present they received during Navya’s son’s birthday, the family said they haven’t taken any gifts from Mr Sawant. “We had informed the ED these matters,” the family reportedly said.
