
Afghan Foreign Minister Set For India Visit Next Month; First Ties-Breakthrough Since Taliban Takeover
New Delhi: Afghan Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi is set to visit India from October 9-16, suggesting new phase in the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Notably, the Taliban minister’s visit to New Delhi marks the first high-level delegation since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021.

Announcing the decision, MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the United Nations Security Council has approved a temporary exemption on international travel restrictions for Muttaqi, allowing the Taliban leader to stay in New Delhi from October 9 to 16.
The spokesperson said that India and Afghanistan have been having a conversation, and pointed out the telecon that had taken place some time back between the External Affairs Minister and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

“We also had a conversation between the Joint Secretary in charge and his counterparts on the Afghan side,” he said, highlighting that when the earthquake hit Afghanistan, India was able to transport relief material to Kunar province.
