'All Are Diabetic These Days, So Consume Less': Bihar Minister's Response To Sugar Price Hike Sparks Row
Patna, Bihar: Sugar prices in Bihar jumped from 48 to 50 rupees per kilogram to over 65 rupees in just 15 days, driven by tight supplies, festive demand, and cane diverted to ethanol.
Responding to the price hike of the essential household item, Bihar Minister for Information and Public Relations Shravan Kumar told reporters that with diabetes so common, fewer people eat sweets, so the hike makes little difference, playing down the price hike.

Social media users mocked the logic of the minister as tone-deaf, sparking row highlighting struggles of people with essential costs hikes. An former civil servant, Ashish Joshi, slammed the minister for his reaction to the sharp sugar price rise.
In a social media post on X, the former bureaucrat wrote, “India has become a land of fools, led by jokers and clowns.”
