India”s largest and first indigenously developed nuclear power plant started operations at full capacity in Gujarat”s Kakrapar, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

“India achieves another milestone”, PM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The reactor at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) had started commercial operations on June 30 but was operating at 90% of its capacity till August 30. It is India”s first indigenously developed 700-megawatt electric (MWe) nuclear power reactor.

“The first largest indigenous 700 MWe Kakrapar Nuclear Power Plant Unit-3 in Gujarat starts operations at full capacity. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers,” PM added.

Kakrapar Atomic Power Station is a nuclear power station in India, which lies in the proximity of Mandvi, Surat and Tapi river in the state of Gujarat. The reactor suppliers are NPCIL and BARC.

NPCIL (The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited) is an Indian public sector undertaking based in Maharashtra”s Mumbai. It is wholly owned by the Government of India and is responsible for the generation of electricity from nuclear power. On the other hand, BARC or Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is India”s premier nuclear research facility, headquartered in Mumbai. It was founded by Homi Jehangir Bhabha as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) in 1954 as a multidisciplinary research program essential for India”s nuclear program.

NPCIL was also tasked with the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of the nuclear power reactors. NPCIL currently holds the operations of 23 commercial nuclear power reactors.

The officials have said that a number of commissioning activities were underway at KAPP 4, which had achieved 97.56 per cent progress by July. The NPCIL, which has plans to build 16 700 MW PHWRs across the country, has reportedly been granted financial and administrative sanctions for the same, reported the Mint.

“India”s power acquires a new dimension today as our largest indigenous 700 MWe Kakrapar Nuclear Power Plant Unit-3 in Gujarat starts operations at full capacity”, wrote Union Home Minister Amit Shah on X. According to him, the plant is a firm step towards attaining the vision of India”s self-sufficiency in power production.

Mr Shah also extended congratulations to the scientist and engineers who were involved in the project.

“India shines brighter on the global stage as the largest indigenous 700 MWe Kakrapar Atomic Power Project Unit-3 (KAPP-3) in Gujarat starts operating at its full capacity”, said the Federal Department of Atomic Energy on Friday.

According to the reports, the government has also sanctioned the building of 10 indigenously developed PHWR – pressurized heavy-water nuclear reactors – in four locations including Gorakhpur in Haryana, Chutka in Madhya Pradesh, Mahi Banswara in Rajasthan and Kaiga in Karnataka.
