A video of thousands of unemployed youths gathered for a job interview at a private company in the Ankaleshwar region of Gujarat’s Bharuch district has gone viral on social media platforms.

The Bharuch Police has started a sou motu probe into the stampede-like situation that occurred on July 9. Almost 1000 people had turned up for the walk-in interview.

In the video, the crowd was seen pushed against the steel railing, causing it to collapse, and taking several people down with it.

The mishap occurred when the job seekers pushed and shoved trying to secure a spot on a ramp leading to the entrance of the hotel where the interview was held. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

A private chemical company, Tharmax Limited, invited aspirants for a walk-in interview for 40 vacancies at Hotel Lords Plaza between 9 am and 4:30 pm, the police said. The company was recruiting for the posts of the plant operator, supervisor-CDS, fitter mechanical and executive-ETP at its new plant in Jhagadia industrial area.

The Office of Employment Officer (Bharuch) on Thursday said that more than 500 candidates had come in for the interview and the company had organized the recruitment drive on its own at the hotel, which was a small place that could only accommodate over 500 people.

The incident had led to a verbal fight between Congress and the BJP. Congress claimed that the video has exposed the flaws in the “Gujarat model” of development promoted by the ruling party, while BJP fired back accusing the grand old party of trying to defame the state through the video.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, claimed on Thursday that the “disease of unemployment” has taken the form of an epidemic in India, and alleged that the BJP-ruled states have become the “epicentre of this disease”.

Sharing the video, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge hit out at BJP and wrote on X, “This video is proof of the ‘cheating model’ that BJP has played on the people of Gujarat for the last 22 years. This video is also a solid proof of the way the Modi government has snatched jobs from the youth and ruined their future for the last 10 years”.
