CJI Felicitates Cook's Daughter; Secures US Scholarship To Study Masters In Law

Pragya, a law researcher and daughter of a cook, managed to secure scholarships for her masters in law studies in two different universities in US. Seeing the 25-year-old’s success after immense hard work, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and other Supreme Court judges took a moment to honour the remarkable young lawyer.

In a special ceremony held in the lounge of the top court, the judges gathered around to applaud Pragya”s achievements and her determination. The CJI also wrapped shawls around Mr. Samal and his wife, the proud parents of the up-and-coming lawyer, honouring them for their hard work and unwavering support.

Daughter of Ajay Kumar Samal, a cook at the Supreme Court, Pragya was inspired by her father’s work at the court and pursued her dreams of studying law. Pragya confessed that her inspiration was none other than the CJI himself.

Expressing her admiration for his words of encouragement and his role in empowering young lawyers, she said, “With the live streaming of court hearings, everyone can watch him (Justice Chandrachud) speak. He encourages young lawyers, and his words are like gems. He is my inspiration,” as quoted by PTI.

Pragya managed to secure scholarships for her masters at either the University of California or the University of Michigan, with the latter offering her a scholarship of 50,000 US dollars. She has also received offers from major Ivy League schools including Columbia Law School, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, New York University and Berkeley Law School.

She expressed her gratitude with a smile on her face as Justice Chandrachud presented her with three books on the Indian Constitution, signed by all the Supreme Court judges.

After felicitating her, Justice Chandrachud said, “We know Pragya has managed something on her own, but we will ensure she manages to get whatever is required.” He also expressed hope that Pragya would return to serve her country. The CJI also highlighted the importance of hard work and the responsibility of each individual in the country to help fulfil the dreams of education for every child.

Despite numerous challenges in her path, the young lawyer was able to achieve her dreams by securing scholarships for her future in the field.
