Congress General Secretary, Jairam Ramesh slams Prime Minister Narendra Modi”s statement on G20 and other global summits as “sheer hypocrisy”. He stated that PM Modi use G20 to make big empty statement about the importance of environment. Taking to X (formerly twitter), Mr. Ramesh pointed that PM Modi talks about environment, climate action and equity while diluting the rights of adivasis and forest-dwelling communities.
The PM’s statements at the G20 and other summits globally are sheer hypocrisy. While destroying protections for India’s forests and biodiversity, and diluting the rights of Adivasis and forest-dwelling communities, he talks of environment, climate action and equity. In a statement, Mr. Ramesh claimed that the Biological Diversity (Amendment) Act of 2023 is an absolute contrast with Prime Minister Narendra Modi”s claim on biodiversity conservation as it does away with criminal offense provision which aid those who claws the forest to “destroy biodiversity and engage in biopiracy to get away scot-free”.
Mr. Ramesh asseverate that PM Modi”s claims of emphasising equity are shown to be completely hollow by the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act of 2023, and said the act will be completely disastrous to Adivasi and other forest dwelling communities and provide free pass to hand over the forest areas to his “select few crony capitalist friends” as he wishes.
Mr. Ramesh claimed the truth to be “the Modi Government is comprehensively dismantling India”s environmental protections and snatching away the rights of the most vulnerable communities dependent on forest”.
