First Of Its Kind: India Successfully Tests 2000 Km Range Advanced Agni-Prime Missile From Rail Launcher

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation and Strategic Forces Command successfully fired the Agni-Prime intermediate-range ballistic missile, the first of its kind, from a rail-based mobile launcher off Odisha’s coast on Wednesday, September 24.

The Agni-Prime Missile Launch validates its 2,000-kilometer range and rapid deployment capabilities.

The development places India alongside Russia and China in possessing canisterized rail-launch systems for strategic assets. Reacting to the leap, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the test for enabling cross-country mobility and short reaction times via India’s rail network.

In a social media post, Rajnath Singh announced the “successful launch” of Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile from a Rail based Mobile launcher system. The minister said the launch is a next generation missile designed to cover a range up to 2000 km and is equipped with various advanced features.

“The first-of-its-kind launch carried out from specially designed Rail based Mobile Launcher, has the capability to move on Rail network without any pre-conditions that allows User to have a cross country mobility and launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility. Congratulations to @DRDO_India , Strategic Forces Command (SFC) and the Armed Forces on successful test of Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile,” the Defense Minister wrote on X.

The minister further added that the successful flight test has put India in the group of select nations having capabilities that have developed canisterised launch system from on the move rail network.
