Gulmarg, one of the popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, welcomed the season’s first snowfall. Usually, the region receives the first snowfall when winter begins, and it normally expected on December.

Snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir and rains in the plains have ended a prolonged dry spell and brought down the minimum temperature significantly in the valley, PTI quotes as officials said on Monday.

The Meterological office forecasts scattered showers in the region over the next 24 hours.

In August, Jammu and Kashmir was struggling due to rain deficit, and the situation was not improving in September, till Saturday. The summer temperatures, posed the threats of heatwave which people in the region are not used to, The Weather Channel reports.

The prolonged dry spell was worrying the apple farmers because as the cultivation requires moisture, the lack of thereof was affecting crop”s quality in different areas of the valley.

Snowfall was recorded in higher reaches of south Kashmir, including around the cave shrine of Amarnath and Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the officials added.

Known for its snow-clapped mountains, and for lupine flowers, Gulmarg is a favourite destination for the tourists. Apart from its picturesque beauty, the place is famous for winter sports. Since the place is also a skiing destination, the winter thrill includes skiing and snowboarding experiences as well.

Besides, the World”s largest igloo cafe opened last year in Gulmarg, and in February this year, a glass igloo restaurant was also opened.

The major tourist attractions in Gulmarg also include St Mary”s Church, Gulmarg Gondola ride, Drung Waterfall, Maharaja Palace, and Maharani temple.
