Born in 1879 to Bengali parents in Hyderabad, Sarojini Naidu was a woman of many talents as she played a crucial role in India’s struggle for independence, was a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi, and became the first woman president of the Indian National Congress in 1925. Mahatma Gandhi sometimes called her Mirabai.
A famous British poet and critic, Arthur Symons, praised her first book, The Golden Threshold, for its beautiful and magical poems.
Her literary journey began at a young age, influenced by English poets like PB Shelley and Alfred Tennyson.

However, it was Edmund Gosse’s advice that shaped her unique style, encouraging her to reveal “the heart of India” and describe its beauty, traditions, and temples. She took this advice to heart, crafting poems that showcased India’s rich cultural heritage.
After independence, she served as the first governor of Uttar Pradesh. Her literary contributions, particularly in Indian English poetry and her musical legacy, earned her the title “Nightingale of India” from Mahatma Gandhi.
Her poetry not only reflected her love for India but also complemented her political activism and advocacy for women’s rights.
