Karnataka: Stones Pelted At Mosque During Ganesh Idol Immersion Procession; Tension Erupts

Uttara Kannada, Karnataka: Karnataka’s Bhatkal town on Wednesday erupted chaos after  unidentified persons threw stones at a mosque and Arabic school during a Ganesh immersion procession.

The incident took place in Bhatkal of Uttara Kannada district when the procession, which started from Taland, was passing through the Ismail Sunni Jamia Masjid and the adjoining Tajus Sunnah Arabic Madrasa on its premises. The incident occurred on the Gulmi Railway Station Road.

The procession had crossed the Gulmi railway bridge and was proceeding towards the railway station when stones were allegedly thrown at the Ismail Sunni Jamiya Mosque and the Tajus-Sunna Arabic Madrasa located on the ground floor of the building.

As per the complaint, two windowpanes of the building were damaged in the incident. The complaint was filed with Bhatkal Town Police Station, and action was sought against those responsible for the alleged stone-pelting.

Tensions gripped in the area following the incident. A group of local Muslims gathered outside the police station and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved. Police conducted discussions with the gathering and assured them that an investigation would be conducted and the persons responsible would be identified and arrested.

Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan MN visited the spot and inspected the area. He also interacted with residents. Following the assurance he gave to the people, the gathering dispersed from outside the police station. Police have launched an investigation into the alleged stone-pelting and are examining CCTV footage and other available evidence to identify the persons involved.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the stone-throwing and efforts are underway to identify those responsible.
