Lok Sabha Passes Waqf Amendment Bill After Over 12 Hours Of Heated Debate
In a session extending over 12 hours, the Lok Sabha approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, with 288 votes in favour and 232 against. The bill aims to enhance the administration of Waqf properties by incorporating technology-driven management systems to improve transparency and efficiency.
The debate was marked by intense exchanges between the government and opposition members. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who introduced the bill, asserted that the legislation does not interfere with Muslim religious practices but focuses solely on the management of Waqf properties. He emphasised the government’s intention to make Waqf Boards more inclusive and secular.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the bill, describing it as a tool aimed at marginalising Muslims and infringing upon their personal laws and property rights. He stated, “The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is a weapon aimed at marginalising Muslims and usurping their personal laws and property rights.” Gandhi further contended that the legislation sets a precedent that could potentially target other communities in the future.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah countered these claims, accusing the opposition of spreading misinformation to instil fear among minority communities for political gain. He clarified that the bill does not seek to interfere with religious matters or the properties donated by Muslims. Shah remarked, “The opposition is spreading the misconception that this bill is an interference in the religious activities of Muslims and the property donated by them.”
AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi also opposed the bill, arguing that it violates Article 26 of the Constitution and fails to protect Muslim interests. He expressed concerns that the amendments would safeguard ancient temples but not mosques. Owaisi stated, “The Waqf (Amendment) Bill doesn’t protect the Muslims. It is a violation of Article 26.”
Today, the Rajya Sabha will take up the bill for debate and later for voting.
