Madhya Pradesh Police Inspector Killed As Illicit Liquor Truck Runs Him Over During Smuggling Crackdown
A police inspector was killed after a truck allegedly carrying illicit liquor ran over him during an interception operation in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district in the early hours of Monday, November 2.
The deceased, Dilip Puri, was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Khategaon police station. The incident took place between 1 am and 2 am on the Indore-Betul highway, along the Harda-Nemawar stretch.
According to police, the operation was launched following a tip-off about a large consignment of illegal liquor being transported from Harda to Gujarat through Indore.
Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra had formed five teams to intercept the suspected vehicles, with Puri leading one of them.
During the operation, the team spotted a suspected truck, bearing registration number MP 43 H 4786, parked near a roadside eatery.
When Puri approached the vehicle and asked the driver to get down, an altercation reportedly broke out.
The driver allegedly accelerated the truck in an attempt to escape and drove it over a road divider.
Puri fell from the vehicle and was crushed under its rear wheel. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Police later seized the truck and recovered more than 1,800 litres of illicit liquor concealed in a specially constructed compartment.

The driver, who initially fled the scene, has since been arrested by the Dewas police.
The incident comes amid an intensified crackdown on illegal liquor networks in Madhya Pradesh.
The state has recently witnessed a tragedy in which 13 people died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Dewas district.
Following the deaths, the state government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident and identify those involved in the illegal liquor trade.
