Sharma died while he was under treatment, just hours before his parents could reach him. The parents learned that Sharma died due to the low oxygen level in the high-altitude region. His body was cremated in Muzaffarnagar on Friday.

This low oxygen level in the high-altitude region is known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), or altitude sickness. It is a common issue in Leh-Ladakh due to the region’s high elevation. AMS happens when the body has difficulty adapting to the lower oxygen levels found at higher altitudes.

Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. To reduce the risk, it’s important to acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, avoid excessive physical activity, and seek medical advice on preventive steps.

It refers to altitudes above a certain point where the amount of oxygen is insufficient to sustain human life for an extended time span. This point is generally tagged as 8,000 m (26,000 ft, less than 356 millibars of atmospheric pressure).
