Five New Districts In Ladakh: Home Ministry

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday decided to create five new districts in the union territory of Ladakh, ahead of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The new districts have been named Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

According to Home Minister Amit Shah, these districts “will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.”

“The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” the home minister said in an announcement. Attributing the decision to Prime Minister Modi, Shah stated that the central government is “committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.”

“Creation of five new districts in Ladakh is a step towards better governance and prosperity. Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people. Congratulations to the people there,” said PM Modi, praising the decision.

Currently, Ladakh has only two districts: Leh and Kargil. The two districts have autonomous district councils that govern them. With the addition of five new districts, Ladakh will now have seven districts in total.

Ladakh was part of erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir before the Modi government revoked its special status in 2019. Jammu and Kashmir has been divided into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
