The BJP on Monday released the first list of 44 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and then withdrew the list. The announcement came in the morning after Central Election Committee finalised the party’s candidates for the polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting in Delhi yesterday, and attended by BJP’s top leadership including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda.

In the list, candidates included  Syed Wazahat from Anantnag, Gajay Singh Rana from Doda, and Javed Ahmad Qadri from Shopian, Syed Showkat Gayoor Andrabi from Pampore, Arshid Bhat from Rajpora, Rafiq Wani from Anantnag West, and Sushri Shagun Parihar from Kishtwar.

In Jammu and Kashmir, assembly polls are going to held after a decade. In the 2014 election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged as the single largest party with securing 28 seats, and BJP came close second with 25 seat. The incumbent National Conference (NC) could grab only 15 seats and the Congress won 12. Following the election, the BJP and the PDP forged a surprise coalition government.

The BJP is going contest the Assembly polls, without forming an alliance with any party. At the same time, the party will support strong independent candidates in the constituencies of the Kashmir Valley instead of fielding its own candidates, India Today reported citing sources.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has formed an alliance with Farooq Abdullah’s NC.
