Markapuram Bus-Truck Collision: At least 13 Dead, PM Modi Announces ₹2 Lakh Ex-Gratia

A tragic road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram has claimed at least 13 lives and left 25 others injured early Thursday morning (March 26, 2026), sending shockwaves across the region.

According to officials, the accident occurred near Rayavaram village in Prakasam district when a private bus collided with a tipper lorry at a turning point.

The bus, operated by Harikrishna Travels, was travelling from Nirmal in Telangana to Vinjamuru in Andhra Pradesh when the crash took place between 5:30 am and 6:00 am.

District In-charge Collector P. Raja Babu confirmed that out of 41 passengers on board, 13 people died on the spot.

The injured were immediately shifted to the Government Hospital in Markapuram, where several are undergoing treatment. At least 10 passengers sustained serious injuries, while five are reported to be in critical condition and are being moved to Guntur for advanced medical care.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident, calling it “deeply distressing.” He announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those injured. The compensation will be provided from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

President Droupadi Murmu also condoled the loss of lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Authorities have set up emergency control rooms in Markapuram and Nellore to assist families and provide updates. Rescue operations were carried out swiftly, and local officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

The incident once again raises concerns about road safety, especially on highways and sharp turns, as Andhra Pradesh has witnessed several major bus-related accidents in recent months.
