Negligence: Video Exposes Gujarat Bridge's Deterioration Days Before Collapse

Vadodara, Gujarat: At least nine people were killed as several vehicles fell into the Mahisagar (Mahi) River after a section of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge in Gujarat’s Vadodara collapsed on Wednesday, July 9. As per the initial reports, vehicles, including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van, were crossing the bridge when it suddenly crumbled, resulting in the fatalities.  At least three people have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals so far.

Notably, videos taken days and months before the tragedy showed the deteriorating condition of the bridge, which connects the Anand and Vadodara districts. A video purportedly from April this year, shows visible cracks on the bridge’s surfaces and jerking while the vehicles are passing through, causing fears of potential risk.

Another video, which is more recent – purportedly around 9 days old – showed the bridge and its surfaces even in the worst condition, indicating clear negligence by the responsible authorities.

Users on X have questioned the alleged negligence of the authorities, even after the poor plight of the bridge was highlighted repeatedly. Locals have also alleged that the authorities had long neglected the bridge and its maintenance. A resident said that the Gambhira Bridge has become notorious as a suicide point. “Repeated warnings about its condition were ignored,” NDTV quoted one resident.

An X user, Sanatani_S, urged people who endured any loss due to the collapse to file “huge compensation cases” with the government.

” Should not stay silent after getting a few lacs as compensation. Demand for punishment with compensation through court. “Such things will not change till people do not go heavy,” the user opined.

Several called the incident criminal negligence, even a case of culpable homicide, while demanding that the people responsible should be tried after dismissal.
