The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Maharashtra’s Sindhuburg, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December last year, collapsed on Monday around 1 pm.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called the incident “unfortunate” and stated that PWD and the Navy officials would visit the location to investigate the cause. On December 4, PM Modi, along with Shinde, Devendra Fadanvis, Ajit Pawar inaugurated the 35-foot statue at Rajkot Fort on the occasion of Navy Day.

“This statue was erected by the Navy. They had also designed it. But due to strong winds of around 45 km/h, it fell and got damaged,” said Shinde, as quoted by ANI. The city has been receiving heavy rains and gusty winds for the past two days.
The Indian Navy expressed its “deep concern” over the incident and stated that a team has been deputed to initiate steps towards restoration.
Opposition leaders criticised the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state over the poor quality of work. Shiv Sena UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, in an X post, called the state government “shameless gaddaars” and slammed the coalition government for choosing “business of money and politics over the pride, the symbol, and the hero of Maharashtra.”

Congress Kerala compared the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue inaugurated by former PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957, which continues to “stand tall,” with the collapsed statue “built by our self-styled saheb collapsed in just 266 days by a strong wind!
