Maharashtra To Roll Out Rs 1,500 Per Month For Over 1 Crore Women

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that over one crore eligible women in the state will receive Rs 1,500 per month under the state government’s ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin’ scheme, which will launch on August 17.

Fadnavis stated that some of the eligible women had already received Rs 3,000 as the installments for two months—July and August—during the trial run of the scheme on Wednesday. He said the government expects over a crore eligible women to begin receiving Rs 1,500 per month after the scheme’s launch.

Initially, the government had announced the launch on August 17 but later clarified that July will be considered as the starting month of the scheme.

The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojna is projected to amount to an annual cost of Rs 46,000 crore to the state exchequer. A flagship scheme of the Eknath Shinde-led state government, the scheme was included in its supplementary budget.

With assembly elections likely to fall in October or November, the scheme is projected as a Rakhsa Bandhan (August 19) gift to women. Shiv Sena (Shinde), BJP, and the NCP (Ajit Pawar) currently share power in the state.

“We have lived up to our words. We had promised that we will transfer Rs 3000 to women beneficiaries, whose bank account details have been scrutinised,” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said. The opposition has criticised the government, calling the scheme a “poll gimmick.”

Reportedly, Aditit Tatkare, Women and Child Development Minister, held a review meeting on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing registration of forms submitted offline and online by women.

Notably, the Supreme Court on Tuesday sharply criticized the state government for failing to offer a reasonable compensation amount in a land acquisition case. The top court said that it would stop the ‘Ladki Behna’ scheme if reasonable compensation was not paid to the party.
