A 36-year-old man died and another was seriously injured after a speeding SUV ran over them while they were sleeping at Mumbai’s Versova beach, police said.

Following the incident, two men- Nikhil Jawade, a Nagpur-based choreographer, and his friend Shubman Dongare were arrested on Tuesday. The tragic incident took place in the early hours of Monday.

The two accused fled the scene upon realizing the severity of the incident but were later arrested by the police. The accident resulted in the death of one of the victims, Ganesh Yadav, an auto driver, while the other, Bablu Shrivastava, a delivery boy, sustained injuries.

According to the police report, Srivastava was abruptly awakened by a blunt impact on his head and hand, after which he saw a car running over Ganesh, who was sleeping beside him, reports India Today.

Though the car driver and friend got out of the vehicle, upon seeing severely injured two men, they fled the scene in their vehicle as the people began to gather.

According to a Hindustan Times report quoting the Versova police, Jawade and another friend named Prateek borrowed a grey Jeep Compass from an unidentified owner in Nagpur and drove to Mumbai.

It was said that Prateek wanted to visit his female friend in Mumbai and thus he persuaded Jawade, who could drive, to accompany him.

After reaching Mumbai on Sunday, Prateek and Jawade parted ways. Jawade then met up with Dongare, an old friend who works in Airoli. Then the two spend their time at Juhu consuming alcohol. Later, they decided to take a joy ride at the beach, despite it being illegal.

Despite vehicles not being allowed on the beach, the SUV entered through a narrow route passing through hutments. Locals who witnessed the incident said that the two accused were drunk.

According to the Free Press Journal report, the police tracked the grey Jeep Compass, which had taken the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and headed towards the Nashik Highway. The vehicle was found near Igatpuri a few hours later.
