As per locals, riverbank cleaning was underway in one of the bridges, constructed in 2004, and after the process was completed, the bridge collapsed as water was released into the river, reported India Today.
Reportedly over 100 years old, the second bridge could not withstand the heavy rainfall and collapsed.
District Magistrate Aman Samir stated that a high-level probe has been ordered to investigate the reason behind the collapse of the bridges. While the exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, media reports indicate that heavy rainfall and desilting work could have contributed to it.
Apart from Saran, districts such as Araria, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Siwan, and East Champaran have reported similar instances over the past two weeks.
The latest incident comes a day after state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the Road Construction Department (RCD) and Rural Works Departments (RWD) to conduct a survey and identify bridges that need immediate repairs.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav took to X and alleged that four bridges had collapsed on a single day and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar of corruption and being “completely silent and speechless of these achievements.”
