Tungabhadra Dam in Koppal, Karnataka released at least 35,000 cusec water into the river basin due to the 19th crest gate being damaged on Saturday. The Authorities noticed that the chain was damaged which led to the break in the 19th crest gate. This incident befell following an incessant rain in the Malnad regions of Karnataka that raised the water level which has a total capacity of 133 tmc.
This has stricken panic among the compatriots that the massive water outflow may wash away their abode who resides downstream including regions like Koppal, Ballari, Vijayanagara and Raichur. The government has notified all residents with a flood alert issuing it to the general public.

On Sunday, The Minister in charge of Koppal district visited the dam location taking further measures to protect the reservoir causing no harm to the residents. It was said that the Tungabhadra Dam hasn’t witnessed any peril or such unfortunate incidents in its 70-year history as it provides water to the whole of Karnataka extending water support to Andra Pradesh and Telangana as well. The Dam was commissioned in 1953 considered India’s largest stone masonry and non-cement dam.

Social media users have been discussing the architectural features as it is similar to Mullaperiyar Dam’s construction using a mixture of limestone and mud. Various accounts commented that this incident is quite alarming, especially for Kerala residents with Mullaperiyar Dam having the same characteristics.
