Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress and Jawaharlal Nehru during his speech in Lok Sabha on Monday. He cited an old speech delivered by the former prime minister in which he claimed that Nehru described Indians as “lazy and low of intelligence”.

In reply to the prime minister, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared the original version of Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech which was delivered on August 15, 1959. She shared the video as well as the text on her X post.

Pandit Nehru being the guardian of the Indian consciousness will consider Indians as lazy? Priyanka wrote on X.

She further added that the Prime minister of India during his speech in the parliament made some allegations against Nehru and hence to bring the light of truth before misinterpreting, she shared the jinx of the speech which was referred by Narendra Modi.

The Congress leader wrote, “After independence, crores of our people faced the challenge of filling their stomachs. The slavery, plunder and exploitation of the British had hollowed out the country. There were millions of deaths due to famine and starvation.”

She then asks whether it is a crime to ask the people of the country to stand on their feet and compete with developed countries. “The Prime Minister of such a country should tell his people that we have to stand on our own feet, work hard and compete with the developed countries. Is this a crime? If the Prime Minister of a newly independent country inspires its people to become self-reliant, is it an insult to the people?”.

She further alleged that it is shameful to misrepresent a few lines from the speech and this act shows how much bitterness Prime Minister Modi and his party have in their minds towards the freedom movement and historical struggles.

The Congress leader then assured that they would distort all statements or lines propagated against them. “It is not just that they will distort any one line/statement/programme/decision and we will clarify it. The thing is that when Modi ji, who is at the helm of power and the country”s media, does such things – does it suit him and the dignity of his position? Or is it unreasonable to expect this from them?” she concluded.
