Punjab Lawyer Arrested For Assaulting 73-Year-Old Mother (image-pixabay)

Police have arrested a lawyer from Punjab for allegedly torturing 73-year-old mother in Rupnagar. The victim’s daughter alerted the police about the abuse and provided them with camera footages which was captured by the CCTV installed in her room.

Reportedly, accused Ankur Verma, his wife Sudha and their son physically assaulted their 73-year-old mother Asha Rani multiple times. Disturbing video has surfaced on social media.

The CCTV camera was installed by the accused in his mother’s room.

The incident came into the limelight when Asha Rani said about the abuse to her daughter Deepshikha, reports NDTV. The daughter managed to get the CCTV footages and she couldn’t believe the brutality her mother had to go through.

In the video, Verma was seen slapping his mother multiple times and aggressively grabbing her mouth and pulling her hair. In another video, her grandson is seen pouring water on Asha’s bed and complained to his parents that she has wet the bed. Ankur and Sudha then assaulted their mother as she lies on the bed.

The videos of assaults are dated on September 19, 21 and 24.

Deepshika at first tried to get the help of her relatives before approaching the police but none were ready to help as her accused brother was a lawyer. Deepshika then reached out to a non-governmental organistaion, which called the cops.

Following the incident, the police rescued Asha and arrested Varma and charged him under Sections 327 (Voluntarily causing hurt to extort property), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC and Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act.

Upon the examination, doctors found multiple bruises on the woman’s body indicating severe physical abuse she endured.

The incident has resulted in outrage in the community against Varma. Ropar Rotary Club and Bar Association, District Ropar has expelled Varma.
