Srinagar Police Charge NIT Student For "Blasphemous" Post Against Prophet Muhammed

On Wednesday, 29 November 2023 Srinagar police announced the arrest of National Institute of Technology (NIT) student for allegedly spreading contents that are deemed as sensitive to religious sentiments on social media. The student, Prathmesh was booked for posting a video that contained, former Hamas’ leader’s son making critical comments against Prophet Muhammed.

Taking to X (formerly twitter), the Srinagar police said they took “cognizance of the incident of uploading sensitive content against religious sentiment of a particular community by one student of NIT Srinagar. The post read that the arrest was after receiving “receipt of communication from NIT authorities” and the case filed under “FIR No. 156/23 u/s 295A, 153A, 153 IPC.

The police also asked the public to stop themselves from “spreading rumours/false information. They shouldn’t fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements”, and added that legal actions will be taken against those involve in “provocative act/instigation”.

Protests and sloganeering erupted from NIT Campus against the “blasphemy”. Video of the protest was circulating through social media platform.

 

The student shared the video that showed Hamas leader Sheikh Hassen Yousef’s son Mosab Hassen Yousef making derogatory comments about Islam and Prophet Muhammed and his personal life.
