Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday launched the “Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam” (Kalaignar Women”s Rights Grant Scheme), which facilitates eligible women of the state with a financial assistance of Rs 1000 monthly.
The scheme was inaugurated in Kanchipuram, on the birth anniversary of Dravidian icon CN Annadurai. Kancheepuram is Annadurai”s home town.
Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai, popularly known as Anna or Arignar Anna or Perarignar Anna was the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu. He also served as the fourth and last Chief Minister of Madras State from 1967 until 1969 and later as the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for 20 days before his death.
The CM distributed ATM cards to the beneficiaries of the scheme and said it is a recognition of women”s hard work.
“It is a matter of pride that the scheme is launched on the birth anniversary of Anna and during the centenary (2023-24) of Karunanidhi”, ANI quoted CM Stalin”s speech at Kanchipuram.
“The Women”s Rights Program has two primary objectives; 1) Recognition of women”s work, and 2) An entitlement of Rs 12,000 per annum will eradicate poverty and lead women to live with self-respect and improve their livelihoods”, wrote DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) on X (formerly Twitter).

What is Kalaignar Women”s rights fund scheme?
- The scheme is known as Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam” scheme (Kalaignar Women”s rights fund scheme).
- Late DMK leader Karunanidhi (1924-2018) is popularly known as Kalaignar, which means an artist of eminence.
- By the scheme, a monthly financial assistance of ₹1,000 will be provided to all eligible women beneficiaries of Tamil Nadu.
- As of now, the government identified 1.06 crore women (1,06,50,000) as beneficiaries.
- The amount will be paid to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer.
- The scheme is a key feature of DMK”s manifesto ahead of the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
